I posted about being SO excited to teach Sunday School and said I was going to post every week about my favorite part of the lesson?? Well I OBVIOUSLY failed at that because I haven't posted since then but I feel a great need to share my Sunday today so I will! I'm not going to make promises about there being future posts like this again though!
This week in our Sunday School class, we now teach the 13 year olds by the way, we started the book of Mosiah in the Book of Mormon. We covered the first 3 chapters, well we were supposed to but we only got through chapter 2 because there was so much good stuff in there. It talks about King Benjamin and his sons in the first chapter but in Chapter 2 King Benjamin begins giving his big speech to the people of Zarahemla. Many people gathered in and around the temple when they were called to listen to King Benjamin. There were so many people gathered that not all of them would fit inside of the temple itself so they began to pitch their tents in the surrounding area, all with their doors facing the temple, and King Benjamin had a tower built for him to speak from. They still had people who could not hear him so there were scribes who would record what he spoke and then people who would run the messages out to those who could not hear.
It was amazing to learn what a "general conference" in that time was like and to make the connection that we still do something similar to that every 6 months in our time. Twice a year, people all over the world gather in front of their televisions and in church houses to hear the words of our prophets and apostles today.
So that was Sunday School! Then I went and got to hear the most AMAZING Relief Society lesson!
We covered 2 conference talks from last October. The first one was titled It Is Better to Look Up By Carl B Cook, of the Seventy. He recalled a day after his first week in the Seventy where he felt overwhelmed by the calling that lay before him. He was in the elevator, staring at the floor when another person entered. he didn't look up to see who it was but continued to stare at the floor. After a moment he heard President Monson ask, "What are you looking at?". Startled, he looked up and simply replied, "Nothing.". Seeing that Elder Cook was weary and overwhelmed, Pres. Monson simply smiled and suggested, "It is better to look up!".
Elder Cook goes on to talk about our need to look up towards Christ in our times of need. We need to turn to Him and ask for His guiding hand. We need to take advantage of that wonderful gift of the Atonement. It hit close to home today as there are many things weighing on my mind that I have been reminded by those wiser and more experienced than me to turn to my Father in Heaven.
The other talk that was addressed was by Elder Robert D Hales, also from the October conference, titled Waiting upon the Lord: Thy Will Be Done. Elder Hales also talks about turning to the Lord during our trials but he addresses the fact that we probably won't receive an immediate answer to every problem. We have to wait on the Lord and rely upon his time frame. It takes a lot of faith the keep our heads up and remain obedient to the commandments when we are waiting for answers to prayers. We need to be courageous and continue to battle through our every day trials. Then we need to accept that the Lord's answer may not be what we wanted but that it is His will and that it must be done. We need to continue in obedience.
