Tyson's First Surgery

Today Tyson had to get some tubes put in. Sad that it came to this but glad to know that it will help with all the ear infections. For those who don't know what has been going on, Tyson has had 6 ear infections since Jan 1st! It has been a long few months. We have been to instant care facilities four times and his doctor twice in the last few months. It has been pretty tough on the poor boy and Chris and I as well. Lots of antibiotics and fussy nights and days. We are hoping that it is all behind us now and that the road ahead is ear infection free...at least for Tyson. I am sure any other kids we will have will get them a few times.

He was such a trooper. We had to be to the out patient area of Davis Hospital at 630 this morning. Tyson woke up on his own at about 545 luckily. We got checked in and taken back to the pre-op room pretty quickly. Then it was struggles with getting his stats since he was so wiggly and then we put him into the gown. He looked so cute in it! They brought a wagon by to help keep him busy while we waited to visit with the anesthesiologist and our surgeon, Dr Bitner. The anesthesiologist was nice and informed us that he would be under general anesthesia but would have no IV. They just used a mask to put him under. The procedure was only going to take 15 minutes unless complications of some kind occurred. We finally got a quick visit from Dr. Bitner and then the nurse took Tyson and they were on their way. Tyson was happy to go with the nurse as she played fun little games with him to keep him distracted. We got into the waiting room and were expecting a 15 minute wait but it seemed like less than 10 minutes later when Dr. Bitner came in and pulled me aside since Chris had left the room for a moment. He told me the procedure went great. There was no fluid behind the ears which was a blessing. He said we couldn't have picked a more perfect time to do the procedure. He told us it would be another 15 minutes then we would be able to see him. Well we knew when he woke up and had been taking to the post-op area. We could hear him screaming from the waiting room. It took a little time to calm him down but after a little apple juice and some animal cookies he seemed to be doing better. Anytime anyone of the nurses would come close he would start to whimper and cry a little. Every time anyone, including me, would touch his feet he would cry for some very strange reason. We were discharged about a half hour later. He fell asleep in the car so we decided to drive for a bit so that he could get a good nap in. Once he woke up he was back to his usual self walking every where and leaving a mess behind him!

He kept pulling at his little bracelet until he got used to it. It was a little tight cause the nurse accidentally cut it a little short.

I told you he looked cute in the gown and little hospital socks!

Looks like we are going to have to invest in a cute little wagon! He absolutely loved riding around in it and looking at everything!

The tubes should stay in anywhere from 12 to 18 months. We have to go in every 3 months to make sure that they are still properly positioned and not getting infected. If we visit with Tyson's pediatrician, Dr. Evans and he looks in his ears that counts so we don't necessarily have to go back to Dr Bitner! I am so glad that we got this done and pray that it does exactly what it is supposed to!
